And more snow. Not great for us, as we need to go out this weekend and the roads are going to be a mess. However it is very good for the land. We’ve been in a drought for a number of years and any moisture is most welcome.

Note to self: you can not use chopsticks when you have a finger out of commission. I can adapt typing/knitting/sewing/even writing to accommodate, but not chopstick use. Results were very messy, also hilarious, but I’m glad I was eating alone and had no witnesses to that disaster.

Government bureaucracy continues to suck. I’ve given up for the day and am going to go spend time in the studio to calm myself down. My pinafore dress is almost finished, it’s just hanging to see if the skirt is going to stretch on the bias before I hem it. My next project is going to be a pair of “suede” trousers. I have exactly one pair of pants that fit, all the rest need a belt to keep them in place (or honestly on at all, a couple are big enough they fall right off). I hate making trousers/slacks/pants/jeans though. Skirts and dresses are so much easier. Except it’s winter and I don’t have any heavy tights. I can get away with wearing sweats/yoga pants under skirts at home, but it’s not a look I want for public appearances.

Next knitting project-leggings? Or is that completely bonkers? Probably, but people knit full length dresses, so.....! I have patterns :D  And probably yarn.

Question of The Day:
March 1 - The Welsh Saint David died in 589 and was canonised in the 12th century. Ever since then, he has been celebrated in Wales and by people of Welsh descent. Have you ever eaten Welsh cakes?

I have not. They look good though, we’ll have to try this recipe.

P.S. Along with snow, we're getting cold again.  -11C / 12.2F when I got up this morning.  High was supposed to be -7C / 19.4F but I'm thinking not.  Mid-afternoon and we're only -10C / 14F.

So just a quick(ish) one today.

Question of The Day:

January 15 - National Hat Day - do you like to wear hats? What does your favourite hat look like?

I like the idea of wearing hats, but there just aren’t any I see that would work. Mostly it’s just baseball/tractor caps and cowboy hats around here. Not my vibe at all and wouldn’t really work with my hair (very long, worn up in a bun). The 40’s and 50’s had some great hats! But again, might not work with the hair. Probably need to go back to the 1890’s up to 1910 to find something I would like and can wear.

I do note, this does not include touques or other winter head gear.  That gets shoved on no matter what when it's cold enough.

December 3 – Make a Gift Day: Do make gifts for anybody? How about cards? I have made gifts in the past, not as much anymore. The family decided a few years ago to stop exchanging gifts. We all have too much stuff, too little money and it was just a source of stress. Now we focus on the meal and enjoying each other’s company. Cards are hit or miss, sometimes I do make a few, sometimes not. And sometimes I just don’t do cards at all. It all depends on how crazy things are (I know if I planned ahead I could make and send cards every year, but that’s not gonna happen).

December 4 – Wear Brown Shoes Day: Do you own any brown shoes? I have a few pairs. Not as many as I did a few years ago, when my wardrobe was all brown and turquoise (aqua/teal). And this summer I realized I was going to have to give up my last two pairs of brown high heels. The feets just don’t like them anymore.

P.S. Re: sugar shenanigans: we were able to get a couple of smaller bags of sugar at not ridiculous prices on Saturday. A check for online prices at Walmart show things are back to more reasonable pricing. Wonder if it was a glitch/mistake or there were too many complaints?

I was a test knitter for Tasha Moss (of Tasha Could Make That)newest pattern, Midge (Ravelry link to pattern).  It's such a fun quick knit I made two!   Very pleased with both, but the second one I made is my favourite.

Tasha writes such clear and detailed instructions, with great advice for customization, that I have made two versions of a couple of her patterns. And I almost never make more than one item from a pattern (except for socks-those are all the same).

November, 29 – Throw Out Your Leftovers Day: How do you feel about leftovers? Are you happy to eat the same food more than once in a row, or do you crave variety in your diet? Do you take leftovers home from a restaurant when/if you eat out?       Absolutely we eat leftovers, not going to throw out food!  Some times we cook extra just to have leftovers (aka planned-overs).  We very rarely eat out, but yes, leftovers come home with us.

And speaking of not throwing out food, locally we have access to a community resource centre associated with Second Harvest, a group dedicated to reducing/eliminating food waste.  So, sometimes the leftovers we eat come from other sources including grocery stores, restaurants and even the local care home.

P.S.  Second Harvest has a great number of resources on their site for ways you can reduce your own food waste and save money on groceries at the same time.  The "Best Before Timetable" is eye opening.

Heh, three times in the same month, totally a record.

November 27 – Pins and Needles Day: Can you sew, either by hand or by machine? What was the last thing you sewed?

Yes to both.  I finished a 1/2 circle midi length skirt in black cotton twill a couple of weeks ago.  I have all sorts of plans for a next possible project, but am struggling with decision paralysis.  I did just finish a couple of knitting projects that had a deadline (today) so maybe now I can focus enough to figure out what to sew next.

Except, honestly, there really isn't much a difference between weekdays and weekends for me.

So, the Friday Five is obviously aimed at those who celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday.  Considering I'm a Canadian, I didn't.  I am going to answer anyway.

The Friday Five for 24 November 2023

1. What did you eat on Thursday? Lunch was soup/salad/sandwich.  Supper was Mushroom, Garlic and Something Pasta.   Something because the original recipe calls for shrimp, but I use what we have and last night there was leftover sausage to use up.

2. How many miles (kilometers) did you drive on Thursday? 0  Didn't even leave the house.

3. How many relatives did you see on Thursday? I was going to say 0 but as my youngest lives here (and so do the cats) that would be rude!  So one or three if you count the cats.

4. What did you wear on Thursday? Nothing special, but might need a bit of backstory.  Winter is here, I run cold and my studio space runs colder (and my space heater quit earlier this week), hence the need to bundle up even inside.  Toe up - 2 pairs socks one cotton, one hand-knit wool, slippers; leggings as long underwear with athleisure pants over; cotton cami top, long sleeve knit pullover, hip length sweater (no closures so I used a shawl pin to hold it closed) and a mid-thigh hand-knit cardigan.  When I got really cold, I wrapped a blanket around my waist and wore it like a skirt.

5. Are you planning to buy anything in particular on Friday? Nope, nyet, nada!   We do need new computer speakers (as of yesterday)  and probably should replace the space heater, but there is no way I'm dealing with the madness of Black Friday.  Hopefully there will still be a few specials/sales next week.

As an aside, Black Friday sales and the attending madness was not always a thing here.  I honestly can't remember when that started.  Traditionally the big sale day was Boxing Day (December 26th).  We still do have Boxing Day (or week) sales, though I'm not sure which actually has the better deals. I seriously avoid going shopping during either period.
