Goodbye 2024

It's been a year!  Some good things have happened, some bad, some truly horrific and some bafflingly weird!  I leave the determination of which event is what type up to the individual.

This year I made it a goal to post/blog more and I did!  I didn't quite meet my minimum of once a month, but still did post most months and some months (especially at the beginning of the year) several times.  I think I want to make this a goal for 2025 as well and see if I can be more consistent.  I appreciate being able to look back on what was happening at different times of the year.  I especially liked being able to track (at least a little) project progress.  Oh and the weather.  That's a good thing to track too.

And on that note, the final Question Of The Day for 2024:

December 31. Have you ever been on a diet, or do you just try and eat healthily? Do you plan to start a diet in the new year?

Yes I have.  Many different ones over the years including Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers.  None were all that successful.   The most effective one ever, is being too poor to buy much in the way of my favourite convenience meals and snacks.  That "diet" lost  me something like 50 lbs (minimum) and 4 to 5 "dress" sizes.  I expect 2025 will be much the same, so no new diets!

I have enjoyed these Questions Of The Day (even when I didn't post them) and am happy to see [personal profile] kazzy_cee  is offering them for 2025!

P.S. It's getting colder again. It was practically shirt sleeve weather for Christmas, but today's high was only -7 C (19.4 F) and it snowed both overnight and during the day with more snow expected tomorrow.

Or a day to recover depending on your preference.

Today: December 26 – Whiner's Day: National Whiner’s Day is here to encourage people to appreciate what they have instead of complaining about what they don’t! What do you have to be thankful for today?

That I could stay home and do something just for me! There are three (3!) Finished Objects (knitting) on the mannequin today. One of which dates back to 2007 or 2008.

December 17 – Wright Brothers Day: How do you feel about plane travel?

Glad it exists, but think we should consider how we use it more carefully (we in a societal sense, not a me sense as I haven’t traveled anywhere by plane in years).

December 18 – International Migrants Day: International Migrants Day emphasizes the protection of migrants’ human rights. The day also recognizes the contributions and efforts of migrants around the world. Has anyone in your family ever migrated from one country to another? What would your country be like without migrants?

Yes, both sides of my family are descended from migrants for the most part, there are only a few indigenous ancestors. My maternal grandparents were both migrants. You need to go back to the early days of the Hudson Bay to find the paternal side’s arrival in Canada. More recently, a sibling migrated to the US. And I really can’t imagine what Canada would be like without migrants. Very, very different I’m sure.

December 19 – Look for an Evergreen Day: Are there many species of evergreens where you live?

Quite a few, not all are native to the area though. Think there’s maybe 1/2 dozen native varieties (including some natural hybrids).

December 20 – Go Caroling Day: Have you ever been caroling? Are there any groups in your neighbourhood who go caroling at this time of year?

Not in the traditional door to door sense (it’s Canada, in the winter, ain’t nobody be doing that ;D). The church choir I belonged to as a kid would do Christmas performances in different venues throughout the season, so sort of? And I have never seen a group caroling in any neighbourhood I’ve lived in. In shopping malls and other places yes, but outside, nope (see above).

To all who celebrate. And wishes for a good day for everyone else.

Today: December 25 – Pumpkin Pie Day: Pumpkin pie, yes or no?

Yes please!

December 13 – Day of the Horse: Have you ever been horseback riding? Have you read any of the classic horse books, e.g. Black Beauty, the Misty of Chincoteague books, the Black Stallion books, the Silver Brumby books? Are you a fan of any horse-related sports, e.g. racing or show jumping?

Like a lot of young girls, I went through a horsey phase. I read a number of “classic” horse stories plus some truly forgettable YA stuff that was available at the time (forgettable as in I have no real recall of any of it). I have been horseback riding a few times in different places, but always a touristy sort of thing so very placid horses that really didn’t need much from me. Not into any sports really, not even horsey ones.

December 14 – Roast Chestnuts Day: Have you ever made or eaten roast chestnuts?

Made no, eaten yes. Mom added them to stuffing one year and to a dessert another time. Was welmed, no need to do that again.

December 15 – Cat Herders' Day: Have you ever had to do anything where it felt like you were trying to herd cats?

Yes, just about every volunteer based situation I’ve ever been in charge of ;D And then there’s the actual cats. Trying to get them to go to bed, get out of the kitchen, whatever is absolutely a challenge. It’s a little easier now since we lost both of the boys and the girls are older, but still not easy.

December 16 – Chocolate-Covered Anything Day: Is there anything that would not be improved by being covered in chocolate? What is your favourite chocolate-covered food?

I would say yes, there is. For example, I can’t imagine tomatoes would improve with chocolate. I like a lot of chocolate things, but given a selection, I’d probably go for chocolate covered almonds first.

A Whole bunch

All at once.

So much for the daily blogging habit. Life got interesting and I just didn’t think about it. I considered just skipping over the missed days, but instead I think I’ll do a few every day (that I actually blog) between now and the end of the month (year!!!).

Today: December 24 – Christmas Eve: Christmas Eve is filled with both religious and nonreligious traditions and a variety of foods. What are some of your holiday traditions? How did they begin?

We used to have a lot more, but most of our traditions have fallen by the wayside over the past few years. Not having small children and with us scattered over several provinces and two countries, celebrations are pretty low key these days. When the Things were younger there was a tradition of opening one(1) present Christmas Eve- always a new pair of pj’s (so Christmas morning photos were decent). We also used to do a big family dinner Christmas Eve, my Mom and her sister took turns most years one doing Christmas Eve, one doing Christmas Day. The adult children contributed sides/dessert/drinks, but they did the main course.

December 9 – Christmas Card Day: Do you send Christmas/holiday cards? How many do you send? Do you receive many cards?

Sometimes we do, used to do it every year and sent out dozens. Now if we actually get around to it, it’s only a handful. And nope, not anymore. Lost contact with a lot of people over the years, too many job changes/household moves for everyone.

December 10 – World Choral Day: Have you ever sung in a choir?

Yep, church choir in elementary school. Probably a bad idea as I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. I was very enthusiastic though.

December 11 – Stretching Day: How flexible are you? Do you do any stretching or flexibility exercises regularly?

I am old and creaky and not that flexible. Honestly never have been, in spite of gymnastics, dance, synchronized swimming and other classes over the years. And the most stretching I do these days is reaching for stuff on the second shelf of the kitchen cupboards (I am short).

December 12 – Gingerbread House Day: Have you ever made a gingerbread house? How did it turn out?

Oddly enough, no I haven’t.

P.S.  Don't know about the city, but our town is having a white (and icy) Christmas.
