And I’m exhausted. Everywhere was more crowded than normal for a Monday and I no longer people well. I did consider putting it of to tomorrow hoping for better roads, but more snow tonite and possibly rain tomorrow. Yikes!

No studio time today, but I have managed to work in a little knitting. For the past couple of years I have been making an effort to work through at least some of my UFO’s. This month I picked up a long abandoned henley style pullover. Not completely sure when I started it, but the pattern was released on Knitty in 2006 and I printed out a copy of the pattern in May of 2008. I know I had to order the yarn from the US, so not sure if I waited to print the pattern until yarn was in hand or I did it before. Either way, I figure sometime end of May to mid-June of 2008. It will be a lovely layering piece when it’s done. Soon hopefully, the body was completely done and since I picked it up again I’ve finished one sleeve and am more than 1/2 way on the second.

Question of The Day:

March 25 - In Sweden it's Waffle Day - are you a fan of waffles and do you own a waffle maker? Have you a favourite recipe?
Yes and yes. I’ve tried several different ones over the years, most recently a Norwegian one. That one was really good! The one that gets the most requests though is the one I have for gingerbread waffles.

P.S. High today was -7C / 19.4F and it is in fact snowing again.

Anyone one else remember that tale? I can picture the illustrations, but the details of the story no longer remain.

I’m pretty sure I’m a country mouse now. Today was our city day and every time we go, the harder I find it. There are just too many people and way to many of them do really, really, really dumb things. I do not want to be a witness to a horrible scene. TYVM!

Question of The Day:
March 19 - International Read to Me Day - did you have family members read to you when you were small? Have you ever had to read aloud to a large number of people?
Yes, lots and lots of reading happened here. Mom was an early primary teacher. I read lots to my kids too. I have read to fairly large crowds, just small passages or letters though, not whole books.

And the now fairly typical catching up:
March 18 - Global Recycling Day - is it easy to recycle items like plastic, metal, glass and paper where you live?
Hah! Had no idea this was a thing, but we took (almost) all our recycling to the depot on this day. We hadn’t been in ages and our garage was filling up. It’s not as easy doing it here as it was in the city. The city had recycling pick up and you just dumped everything in a single bin for them to sort. Here we have to drive to the depot and have to sort it all ourselves. It’s not really that big a deal though, takes about 5 minutes to get there and we presort.

March 17 - St Patrick's Day - are there big celebrations of the Patron Saint of Ireland where you live? Do you take part?
Not really, the local bars have promotions and there’s shamrock decorated cupcakes at the grocery store, but nothing big. And nope, not a bar person nor a fan of grocery store cupcakes with any kind of decoration.

March 16 - In 1822 Rosa Bonheur - artist was born. She specialised in painting animals some of which you can see here. Have you ever tried to draw an animal?
Yes I have, it did not go well. I’m much better with architecture.

March 15 - In the UK it's Comic Relief Red Nose Day - a day to raise money for charity. Red noses are available to buy in various places - have you ever worn a red nose?
Nope, nope, nope and double nope.

P.S.  Weekend weather was gorgeous, sunny skies and warm.  Highs around +16C / 60.8F.  Yesterday was pretty good too, though the wind really kicked up about mid afternoon.  Today the high was +5C / 41F and we're expecting snow anytime now.  It's supposed to continue to snow for the next 5-6 days.  Guess Mother Nature didn't want us getting too excited about spring.

A Day Of Outs

Feb. 20th, 2024 07:55 pm

Today. We have a pick up from Food Rescue this morning and then some quick errands. While we’re out, we plan on a trip to the library.

Depending on how long that all takes, I may or may not get studio time today. I got the new project cut out and all prepared, so I can jump right into sewing. I’m hoping the actual sewing goes smoothly and it can be finished before the end of the week.

Speaking of finishing, I finished the second sleeve of the test knit last night. Just the button band to do, but first I have to make a decision about the collar. I knit it too long, or too long for me. I could rip back, or I rather like the look of it folded over. Hmmmm, perhaps a query to the designer would be appropriate.

Question of The Day:
February 20 - International Mother Language Day: What is the mother language of your home?

Nominally English, but I suspect some may argue with that. It’s much more Americanized that what is typically understood to be English in England but with it’s own specific Canadian words, phrases and idioms.

Long Day

Feb. 16th, 2024 06:15 pm

Today. It was our monthly trip into the city and we decided to get an early start. Probably was a really good idea, we were able to head home by 2 pm and traffic was already building. Friday afternoons before a long weekend are always bad traffic. Even knowing that, a 6:30 am start was still ugly.

1. Have you ever been the president of anything?
Nope, have held positions in a variety of organizations over the years, but avoided that!

2. What do you think is the most important leadership trait?
Patience, lots and lots of patience.

3. What time period did you find the most interesting to learn about in history class?
Precolonial South America.

4. What's something you think about doing, but you haven't gotten back into in several years?
Walking~as in nature walks and easy hiking. Not sure I’ll ever be able to get back to it.

5. If you could add one more random holiday to February, what would it be?
February 29th should totally be a holiday! Just because.

Question of The Day:

February 16 - Tomorrow is the third Saturday in February and it's National Red Socks Day - will you be wearing red socks?

I was going to say no, because all my red(ish) socks are in the laundry, but then I remembered that the fluffy slipper socks I will be wearing tomorrow are red (to match my pj’s) so I will be for some of the day.

P.S. Another gloriously sunny and clear morning, but it was still -19C / -2.2F when I got up. Ugh!

Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

Well, sort of. Ran out and got my errand done. I should have just dealt with it yesterday. Things were not better today.

Spending the rest of the day with my knitting. I finished up all my current sewing projects yesterday and need a day or so to work out what to start next. My list of projects is about 3 years worth of work long and it keeps growing!

Question of The Day:

February 8 - Have you ever made homemade soup? Care to share your favourite recipe?
All the time. Don’t use that many recipes though, mostly soup is a vehicle for leftovers/things that we need to use up, so it’s all improvisation. That said, the following is a good one and this weekend would be a perfect time to make some.

Cream of Carrot-Cheddar Soup

2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 lb. carrots, shredded (8-10)
1 lb. potatoes, shredded (3-5)
6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
1 bay leaf
1/8 tsp. Tabasco sauce (or to taste)
1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. sugar
salt and pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups milk
1 to 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded

1. In large pot saute onion in butter or margarine
2. Add broth, vegetables and seasonings
3. Simmer until vegetables are tender
4. Add milk and cheese, stirring until cheese is melted
5. Discard bay leaf
6. Serve hot, sprinkle with parsley if desired.

We Were Out

Feb. 7th, 2024 03:34 pm
alteredzed: Three cats squished in one cat bed (Default)

Very, very briefly this morning. It snowed over night and continued to snow pretty much all morning. None of which was in the forecast! I’m supposed to go out again this afternoon, but I’m going to postpone to tomorrow and hope the weather clears and so do the roads!

Question of The Day:
February 7 - Safer Internet Day - how careful are you about passwords. Do you use a password manager or just use the same one everywhere?

Fairly careful, I think. I probably don’t change them as often as some would, but I definitely do not use the same one everywhere! And I guess I use a password manager, if a random handwritten notes (stored in equally random places) count.

So we figured we should get out as soon as possible today to do the weekend shop. It felt like every one else in town had the same idea!

In typical us fashion, the rain turned to snow just as we set out, but it’s done and we were finished before it got too scary out there.

Question of The Day:
February 3- What's you're favourite way to cook/serve carrots on this Carrot Cake Day?

I had no idea there was a Carrot Cake Day! And my favourite way to serve carrots, other than as carrot cake of course, is raw with dip.

We're Off

Jan. 30th, 2024 08:55 am
alteredzed: Three cats squished in one cat bed (Default)

Out today. We have a pickup at Food Rescue later this morning and then after lunch we need a quick trip to the grocery store. We’ve also decided, since we are out, we’ll make a trip to the library. It’s been a while since we did more than a quick stop to drop off or pick up items.

This does mean I probably won’t get any studio time today. The tee shirts are in the state they where when I quit on Saturday. I did get studio time yesterday, but I got distracted by the research project I started on Sunday. I may be avoiding dealing with that stupid fabric. Tomorrow for sure!

Question of The Day:
January 30 - It's croissant day - do you prefer sweet, savoury, plain or would you rather not eat them at all?

No preference, I’ll take them all, TYVM!

Zed

P.S. It’s +8C / 46.4F at 8:30 am. High is expected to be +9C / 48.2F, but it’s windy. Gusts are up to 26 km/hr (about 16.16 miles/hr) so not horrible, but noticeable.
